Florida State has been stripped of 6 scholarships (over a 3 years), put on four years probation, and could have up to 16 wins taken away due to an academic cheating scandal. The NCAA has said that this is a major violation.
Football was not the only sport involved in this scandal. The Seminoles baseball, men's track, woman's track, basketball, softball, and golf were also involved with this scandal. The NCAA does not believe the university knowingly played athletes involved in the academic cheating ring, and the could have been penalized a lot more.
It is reported that tutors and academic advisers wrote part of papers and gave "improper assistance" to the athletes taking online courses.
For a historical standpoint, this could put Bobby Bowden up to 17 wins behind Joe Paterno on the all time FBS wins list. It may not be that large, however, as they will only be stripped of wins in which even one athlete participated that was in this cheating ring.
Florida State will appeal these penalties, claiming the school had no idea they were playing student-athletes participating in a cheating ring.It should be interesting to see if any names of the student-athletes involved as Florida State was home to some high profile athletes over this time and not just in football.
