After Lane Kiffin and co. left for USC, the Tennessee administration felt they had to make a quick move hiring their next head coach. After going after and failing to hire Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and Duke head coach David Cutcliffe, the Vols hired Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley.
Dooley was 17-20 as head man at LT, but has a much more impressive resume then his record would indicate. He is the son of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, and was an assistant under Nick Saban for 7 years. At LSU he was the recruiting coordinator who brought in the talent that won a national championship. He also was an assistant under Saban in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins. He seems like a likable guy, which should help in recruting. I have a feeling Vols fans will like this guy a lot.
Dooley must keep in tact a top 10 recruiting class, as his first task. If he does so, Tennessee has talent coming back and could make some noise in the SEC for years to come. I like this as a some what under the radar signing.
