Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli Suspneded for Entire 2010 Season

Chip Kelly, head coach of the defending Pac-10 champion Oregon Ducks, has suspended his star QB and Heisman candidate Jeremiah Masoli for the entire 2010 season after Masoli pleaded guilty to misdemeanor 2nd degree burglary.

Masoli was originally facing felony charges, along with former Duck receiver Garrett Embry, but they reached a plea deal with prosecutors, and will serve three days in prison starting today according to the linked article above. The burglary charges stem from the two players allegedly breaking into and robbing a Frat House on the Oregon campus in late January.

Masoli passed for 2147 yards and 15 TDs, and also rushed for 668 yards and 10 TDs, as he lead Oregon to the Rose Bowl last year. He would have been a candidate for the Heisman trophy had he not been suspended. Oregon will now likely turn to senior Nate Costa who has only 38 pass attempts in his college career.

One thing to keep in mind LeGarrette Blount was suspended suspended for all of last year after punching a Boise State player in the face after a game, and returned for Oregon's last two games. But that is unlikely to happen in Masoli's case, because he can take a red shirt this year and return in 2011.

Masoli and Embry weren't the only Ducks in court today. Running back LaMichael James was sentenced to 10 days in prison for misdemeanor harassment, and was suspend for only one game. Oregon opens their season against New Mexico, who went 1-11 last year.
